Start with a bounded workflow
Choose a specific process, identify its inputs and outputs, and decide what successful behavior looks like. Give the system only the access it needs to do that work.
Make action visible
Record the steps an automated workflow takes. Show the relevant sources and make errors understandable. When the system is uncertain or the action is consequential, route the decision to a person.
Design for recovery
Plan for unavailable dependencies, unexpected outputs and partial completion. Build a way to pause, retry or reverse appropriate actions. Monitoring should help the team understand how the workflow behaves over time.
